Hundreds of surfers riding melodious sea waves with a backdrop of picturesque sun set – picture this in your head and that was my view everyday from the balcony of Weligama Bay Mariott resorts. It offers a complete package to the travellers whose idea of a vacation is sunbathing on the private beach, delicious food, Swedish massage with your spouse while your kids play at the adorable play area.
Located 175 km away from the Colombo airport (Bandaranaike International Airport), it took us exactly 2 hours to reach Weligama Mariott resort. Thanks to the UBER and superb highways. Although, Uber is readily available at the airport, but if your flight is landing at odd hours then we would highly recommend you to book your cab in advance. This Uber trip from the Airport to Weligama cost us approx LKR 11,500 (62 USD) with an additional Toll tax of LKR 900 (5 USD). We weren’t able to book this ride via cards so make sure that you have adequate Sri Lankan currency.
You can expect a modern interior with Mariott signature style of the extravagant lobby area. We stayed there in December so that’s why we could see the Christmas vibes in every corner of the hotel. The main restaurant, Weligama Kitchen, serves the delightful food all day long. They have a gym, spa, bar, kids play area and a private beach along with helpful staff to make sure that you have a comfortable stay.
Room was very well designed. It was fully equipped with all the basic amenities that one would expect from a luxury hotel. Though the wardrobes were not enough for a person like me who loves to carry loads of clothes. I fell in love with the sea-facing view. I spent hours sitting in the balcony doing nothing but watching the rhythmic dance of waves.
Have a look at the Room
Weligama Kitchen serves delightful buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu was widespread from continental to Thai to traditional Sri Lankan food. The head chef, Saurabh Maheshwary, was kind enough to prepare eggless pancakes and paranthas for us. I enjoyed the Srilankan delicacies, my personal favourite was appa and Vinay loved Kottu.
Also, their portion sizes were huge, so if you are planning to order in-room then order it wisely. If you are vegan or have any special dietary requirements then just drop by a bit early and talk to chef they would be happy to do the adjustments.
Breakfast @Weligama Kitchen
Every day after having breakfast, I usually sat near the beach area and read my book for long hours while Vinay had an amazing time in the pool. Hotel is perfect for families and couples. Kids can enjoy the playroom while parents take long walks on the beach. After a tiring day at the beach, you can even indulge in a soothing spa experience, which opens till 11 PM.
A big shoutout to the courteous reception staff, Mr Yashoda, who was thoughtful enough for letting us check in early due to our odd flight timings. Not only he upgraded our room but did our check-in formalities in less than 5 minutes and handed over the room key at 6 AM.
If you are planning a trip to Goa this year then give it a shot to Sri Lanka, and thank us later. Special thanks to Weligama Bay Marriott Resort for such warm hospitality.
